Cleaning

For removal of heavy corrosion on the inside of iron components or on surfaces without cast detail, 20-40 mesh glass is used in conventional blasting methods

Various methods of abrasive blasting are necessary to sufficiently clean iron. Always, the least aggressive method is chosen. Judgments must be made as to how much corrosion may be left in place. Iron corrosion contains all that is necessary (including oxygen and bound water) to continue even under a heavy epoxy primer. However, corrosion removal must end where erosion of important cast detail begins. Various grades of ground glass are our preferred abrasives.

Where cast iron detail is sharp or fine, the least aggressive but effective cleaning away of corrosion is performed using a JOS nozzle and a very finely powdered glass. The JOS method, a proprietary German invention, propells glass powder with compressed air at pressures between 20-40 psi along with an injected stream of water. The action is very gentle - it is harmless to blast against the palm of your hand -but effective against brittle yet yielding material like corrosion on iron.

Finer glass is used on surfaces with some broader cast articulation
